University Senate

“Senate” shall mean the Senate of the University established under Article 49 of the Proclamation No. 1152/2019 and this Legislation.

According to Woldia University Academic Legislation 2024, the Senate shall be accountable to the President.

Powers and Duties of the Senate

The senate, being the leading body of Woldia University for academic matters and without prejudice to the responsibilities of the board, shall have the responsibilities to:

  • Determine the academic calendar of the University;
  • Accredit academic programs and their curricula and supervise academic units to ensure the relevance and quality of education and research;
  • Legislate and ensure proper implementation of the institution’s statutes related to all
    academic and research matters in accordance with the Proclamation;
  • Determine conditions on which degrees are awarded or revoked;
  • Determine an institution-wide framework for quality enhancement and student
    assessment;
  • Advise the president, upon request, on appointments of academic office holders;
  • Approve promotions to the rank of assistant and associate professor;
  • Recommend to the board promotions of academic staff to the rank of professor;
  • Determine the type and amount of University service charges other than tuition fees;
  • Decide on the type, number, membership, and responsibilities of its specialized
    committees;
  • Recommend to the Board the amount of tuition fees to be charged by the University;
  • Formulate policies and guidelines for planning and utilization of resources;
  • Open, formulate, modify, revise and close the academic units and programs of Woldia University;
  • Award honorary degrees and other academic prizes to persons with outstanding
    achievements meriting recognition by Woldia University, upon request by the president;
  • Appoint committees, which may include individuals who are not members of the Senate, to carry out any of the functions or exercise any of the powers of the Senate;
  • Determine its own rules of procedure and elect a secretary from its members;
  • Issue specific directives on the basis of law and policies drawn up by the Board particularly on student administration, academic matters, procedures for selection of academic heads, employment of academic staff, promotion, fringe benefits, discipline and payment of extra work;
  • Prepare and submit to the Board the University’s strategic and development plans through the President;
  • Carry out other powers and duties vested in it by the Proclamation and as may be assigned to it by the Board/ the president.
